  1. Cost is the problem. I have always been an AMD customer. Ever since I started doing my own building and upgrading in 2016 I upgraded at least something in my PC every generation be it CPU, GPU, MoBo, RAM, or just done a whole new system. When AMD started the 7000 series processors and it was going to cost me double to get a comparable MoBo to what I already had just to upgrade I haven't spent a dime on anything PC related and will continue to not spend any money. I would rather just completely abandon the PC industry than to have them continuously screw me out of money just because they think I'm stupid enough to over pay for every single purchase.

  2. Never felt the need to use watercooling on any of my PCs. They look cool, but I don`t intend of overclocking to the level where I need watercooling and maintenance would be just too much of a pain.

  3. A big part of the problem is that custom water blocks usually lack backward or forward compatibility. All PC parts lose some value over time, but for custom blocks it's pretty close to 100%. Many enthusiasts have spent wads of cash on custom water cooling parts that don't work with any CPU platform or GPU other than the specific one for which they were designed. So three or four years in, they're essentially valueless.

  4. Air coolers have been good for a long time. And right now, copper heatsink fans are performing extremely well, for as little as $20-$30 from companies like Thermalright. The truth is watercooling is a waste of time, money, resources. A fan gets you 99% of the benefit for a fraction of the cost and headaches.

  5. I feel very fortunate to be in the position to afford these luxuries. But as Jay said, with the reduced demand, my choices may end up being extremely limited in the future.

  6. As someone who has never done a custom loop, I have to say the price is definitely the issue. I'm far from scared to attempt my first custom loop. But any time I'm pricing out my next build, I would much rather put that money into raw performance of the parts themselves, because overclocking isn't what it used to be either. I'd rather run a Noctua cooler, with higher end hardware, instead of having this awesome custom loop on average hardware because half my budget went into the loop… Just doesn't make sense to me. While pricing my new build, I'm definitely trying to go AIO, but even that doesn't make much sense these days given the overclocking situation

  7. Hey ive a Rog RYUJIN III 360 ARGB EVA-02 EDITION AIO about too go into my rig and i still think ive made a good choice, ive watched plenty of streams on the subject and it still works out a better cooling system

  8. Let's cut to the chase. Graphics card prices are what started everything, and motherboards are following suit. If GPU's were 50% to 60% less than what they are now, the price of other PC components would be irrelevant. Look at how memory (RAM), SSD's, PC cases, case fans, power supplies and CPU's are still reasonably priced relative to inflation. Regarding custom water-cooling prices, I blame overengineering. Look at the quality of custom loops fifteen years ago compared to today. Custom loops in 2007 were beer quality compared to the champagne quality of custom loops today. The fittings, tubes and pumps that are in a PC today are what you'd see in a Rolls Royce automobile's cooling system.

  9. Bought my first custom WC from performance-PCs back in 2010. It's really a great company. And Jay really keeping a roof over my house is a top priority (as over my head), but I digress. Also you've used commodity as an opposite to necessity and that's plain wrong fuel is a commodity and is also a necessity for instance. But that's all what makes a J2C video a J2C video. Some opportunity for a random person sound smart. But in the end you're one of the OGs and a great WC connoisseur, that has years of arguing in internet forums before even YT was a thing. Much respect from Brazil, keep up the good work! I'm here probably since 2012.

  10. There has been a lack of actual innovation in consumer watercooling products for a long time.

The last thing as someone who has been DIY-watercooling since 1999 that genuinely wowed me is Aqua Computer’s Leakshield that can detect leaks and even prevent spillage from small openings by adjusting the cooling loop’s internal pressure.

Everthing else seems to just be the 1000th copy of the 100th iteration of generally the same stuff.

  11. i think it is NOT a Problem of the Watercooling … it is a Problem of "cant get inough Profit out of junk" if a CPU Waterblock starts to cost more than the CPU wich i want to cool with it .. than i start looking at companys where i get a better Produkt for a lower price … and this is not only a Fact for EK against Alphacool … it is the same with Motherboards and Grafic cards … i am in this Business since 1985 when i started as a Service techniken at Intel and now working as an Network Admin .( not anymore at Intel) in the past You coud Build a Good PC between 2000 and 3000 DM today this is the Price of a good but overpriced Grafic card and i am not willing to spend over 500€ on a am5 Motherboard or a "beginner" GPU . to compare Waterblocks the Alphacool core1 starts with 100€ ( without RGB ) and the EKWB EK-Quantum Magnitude – AM4 cost around 200€ i say for the Companys wich think they are the Kings and we customers are the Milk cows … look how you can live without us !!

  12. Also during the pandemic everyone bought computers and parts to the point hardly any were available.
For private entertainment purposes or work from home and gaming combined.
As for a long while no one was allowed outside long unless to go work In Your essential sector job.
That aside inflation idd is a pain in the butt.
Just life alone to begin with…
Groceries and everything kept getting more expensive. Fuel is coming down a little bit lately.
But since the pandemic I for instance have had multiple surgeries, my baby daughter hospitalized multiple times in one year. Paying off the house, 2 cars, and "creche".
I now and then only managed to buy storage or cosmetic upgrades.
And buying only what needed to be bought to get by.
I can relate easily to what he is saying. Since I still sport my 3800x, rx 5700xt system.
I had plans to go x3d and upgrade the main rig on am4, and transplant the 3800x into a different pc. Ended up buying cheap used and new parts, parts I still had laying around to function as a darts rig.
Thinking about a case swap though to decrease the overall size. Since that system does fairly light work.

  13. I looked at it due to performance when I upgraded to my 5900X. Read a lot and the Be Quite Air cooling was a lot more appealing. Has worked great, even cooler than my mates setups and they all have AIO Watercooling systems. Still very happy with my basic setup.

  14. i never wanted to watercool … to be honest … its the opposite … i was always hoping that the wattage usage not skyrocket so hard that it will be nessecary
my problems with watercooling: first its the water i prefer it outside of my system its just a feeling thing .. the maintenance … the look of it i dont like in most cases .. the time you need instead of just an air cooler for installation and maintenance … the fact that you can get problems way easier with a loop then with an air cooler …. and long after that its the cost

and yes that even means if i could get some sort of watercooling for 40€ or an air cooler for 100€ … i would go with the air cooler without even thinking most likely

but i still dont like how it goes in that topic even without any interest in watercooling im pretty sure better cooling solution are always a good thing if watercooling is getting bigger in the market the air cooler have to get "something" to stay competitive .. for the moment just a lower price will do the trick .. :/

  15. I'm glad I got to build a fully custom watercooled system, I've only done one, but it satisfied that itch I've had ever since becoming a pc enthusiast.

I wouldn't do it again even if I had the money to do it, it's not the maintenance, it's not the awkwardness of replacing or upgrading parts, it's not even the lack of tangible benefits that used to come from doing it, it's more the insane cost of the parts married to an industry with short-sighted, greedy morons running (more like ruining) everything putting me off ever doing another loop.

I bought ek parts for my build and I had no issues, but this was back when everything on the surface seemed to be running well, now however I'd consider it monumentally stupid to buy anything from ek, heck I'd consider it risky to accept a freebie from them given how badly things are allegedly going there.

It's such a shame, cause building a custom loop was an incredible amount of fun, it felt like the first time I built a pc, that mix of nerves and excitement while testing the loop for leaks was unforgettable, but the cost of entry is just too high and it's killing the industry, and it's killed my enthusiasm for watercooling

  16. Watercooling needs to be seen more as an investment. It allowed me to run CPU / MB combo PCs for 6-8 years since 2004, only having to upgrade the GPU. Hope and guess there will be HQ-parts for enthusiasts and guys like me.

  17. For me there have been two factors. Firstly I usually make ultra low power systems. Often these just need a heat sink and that is all. My latest only draws 30w including speakers screen the whole works. Second, water cooling prices have got to the point where you can design everything yourself and have it made cheaper than buying one. I did this for a gaming machine.

  18. Jay, I totally believe you when you say you're recommending a shop simply because you like it and without any further intention.
But 'I never got a dime' and 'they sent me free stuff' absolutely don't go well together. Just wanted to point that out. It's probably a very very grey zone

  19. I've been planning my first custom loop for months now. It's definitely noise & aesthetics (probably not even in that order). I started with listing high end material and am slowly going down to a more sane level when it comes to my expectations – because let's face it, I don't NEED it. Not even at the height of summer. But it's something I put money aside for and still want to do it, because these builds are just so damn impressive. Poor person's midlife crisis, lol! Maybe not this year, but at some point for sure.
